Sooo, didja hear I’ll probably be taking off early? Friday, maybe around 10? Or might be even earlier because we’ve got a long drive down to Drixel. It’s not too far from Bakersfield if you know where that is. Kinda south. It’s where my uncle lives and I haven’t seen him in a pretty long time so we thought we’d go down there. Should be fun.

Denny’s restaurant, longtime cornerstone of Highway 101 and Ukiah’s busiest road into town, closed a couple years ago. Nothing was done to prevent it being destroyed by various vagrants, criminals and druggies who infest the area. It’s not even clear city officials knew it had shut down; the Lords of Ukiah wouldn’t be caught alive at a Denny’s. In March a representative from Habit Hamburger came to town to discuss purchasing Denny’s. The project manager met with the city’s Design Review Board.

We were standing in the lobby waiting in the popcorn line, and we noticed a smartly dressed black teenager in front of us. She wore familiar teen couture: distressed jeans so tight she’ll need a spatula to get them off, and a t-shirt featuring a rock band that hasn’t recorded, or maybe even been alive, since she was born. From our left came another teenager, this one blonde and wearing the same uniform. She hurried to her friend: “Oh my God!” she laughed.

News that Dick’s Bar in the very quaint Village of Mendocino has closed down surprised me only because I had assumed it had disappeared a decade or more ago, transformed into an art gallery, a real estate office or a vape shop. Everywhere, bars are nearly extinct. The Forest Club is the last true bar still standing in Ukiah. Fort Bragg has a pair of gems in the Golden West and, almost next door, the Welcome Inn. Visit while you can.
