MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Queen City Running Company on Baraga Avenue in Marquette will soon have an updated look. “We are going to redo the siding and drop down the windows and make it a little bit more inviting for everyone, and yeah, we are just excited to bring more energy and life to this block,” said Queen City Running Company Co-owner Paige Du Bois. Queen City is one of five businesses benefiting from a $534,000 state grant.
Dunegrass Cannabis Dispensary closes suddenly in Marquette

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - A cannabis dispensary in Marquette has abruptly stopped its operations. The Dunegrass company dispensary that opened in 2021 now has a closed sign on its window at 100 Genesee Street. Right now, we don’t know the reason why the store has closed. Dunegrass is also a chain location, and the Marquette location is no longer listed on the company website. Dunegrass owners have not responded to our phone calls. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
Marquette gears up for Sunday’s South Shore Shootout fishing tournament

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Sunday, the lake is calling, as an annual fishing competition is returning to Marquette. The South Shore Fishing Association will be launching the season’s first event on Lake Superior, next to Mattson Lower Harbor Park on Sunday. The Spring Shootout will feature all-inclusive categories. Those categories range from total salmon and lake trout to the largest salmon, steelhead, lake trout and brown trout.

MUNISING, Mich. (WLUC) - As temperatures rise, summer adventures are beginning. Cruise season kicks off on Saturday at Pictured Rocks in Munising. Business owners like Gallery Coffee Company Owner Tom Dolaskie say that when the cruises launch, Munising comes alive with visitors. “Probably 90% of what small businesses see as far as their revenue model comes from the summer tourism seasons that start when Pictured Rocks Cruises starts with their boats in the water,” Dolaskie said.

Most days, East Channel Brewing Company in Munising operates as a laid-back neighborhood pub. But if you’re there on some Wednesday evenings, you’ll hear singing. Twice a month, the upstairs turns into a space for the Grand Island Shanty Club.

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Several law enforcement agencies were at Northern Michigan University to learn about how prescription drugs are being mishandled on Wednesday. For the Drug Enforcement Administration, every training session is a new opportunity to battle drug addiction. Marquette County Sherrif Greg Zyburt says officers learned some doctors can’t always be trusted. “They’ve been known to give drugs to people that shouldn’t have them, and they make money on it,” Zyburt said.

Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians visited Manistique to raise awareness about missing Native people. “Gone but not forgotten.” It’s a statement that echoed throughout Monday’s march in Manistique. Brenda Kinnart from Escanaba, among many other Yoopers, is committed to helping solve it.
Summer camp for Marquette dance studio now open for registration

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - A dance studio in Marquette will soon host a summer dance camp. Northern Sky Dance and Fitness in Marquette is now open for registrations for its summer dance camp series. It starts June 2 and runs through early August. The studio will host multiple camps, like a cartoon-inspired camp and a Barbie Life ballet camp. Owner and dance instructor Skylar Taavola says she was inspired to open this camp after gaining experience at camps in the past.
MSP continues enhanced measures to fight drug trade

UPPER MICHIGAN (WLUC) - The fight against drug trafficking continues to test law enforcement. The Michigan State Police says it’s stepping up its crackdown effort. Ishpeming Police are reporting a drop in drug crimes. A few weeks ago, troopers were along the US-41 corridor between Marquette and Negaunee tracking drug movement. MSP 8th District Public Information Officer Ben Eckola says drug traffickers are getting creative.
