The Shakespeare Corrected initiative is brings the arts to the incarcerated. The program at the Decatur Correction Center, a minimum-security facility for women, is led by Alex Miller, a professor with nearby Milikin University’s Department of Theatre and Dance. Along with visiting professor Victoria Scrimer and with help from their students, they bring Shakespeare’s words to life for these women, many of whom never dreamed they’d be on stage.

EVANSTON, Ill. — During the Great Migration, many African Americans moved to urban centers in the North hoping for better opportunities. And many settled in Evanston and found jobs in homes from Kenilworth to Lake Forest where they cooked, cleaned and helped care for children. They would often leave home before dawn and return well after sundown. Evanston’s Shorefront Legacy Center. Shorefront was founded to highlight Black history on the North Shore. The organization collects, preserves and educates.

(NEXSTAR) — The first Black congregations in America pre-date the nation’s founding in 1776. Since then, African American churches continue to support faith, and the fight for Civil Rights across the country and in Chicago. The origins of the Black church in America could conceivably be traced to the first experiences of Africans in this country, on plantations. When ministering to Blacks, white preachers often used so called “slave bibles,” different from the ones they used in their own churches.
