While many died, some lived on to share their stories. Veterans from the Armed Forces Retirement Home visited the monument Friday afternoon, allowing them to pay respects to the fallen heroes. Some of them, like Marine veteran Harold Mowry, have personal connections to names on the wall.

The council deliberated for an hour and a half on the Bikin’ the Beach event, a proposed event that could bring bikers and motorcyclists from across the nation to the Gulf Coast. Some council members were concerned with the city police department’s busy schedule around the originally proposed date and lack of manpower.
