MADISON (WKOW) -- A free, valid voter ID is available for anyone who wants to vote in the upcoming election on November 5. The Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) provides Wisconsin State ID cards that can be used for voting -- so long as the person trying to get one has a few pieces of paperwork.
DoorDash driver sentenced in fatal pedestrian crash

MADISON (WKOW) -- A DoorDash driver convicted of killing a pedestrian was sentenced Friday, according to Dane County court records. Janessa Cardenas, 27, was convicted of second-degree reckless homicide and homicide by use of a vehicle - use of controlled substance in December 2022. In court, she was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison, with her sentences running concurrently. Her prison term will be followed by five years extended supervision.

EVANSVILLE, Wis. (WKOW) -- Rock County authorities gave updates Friday afternoon after two tornadoes tore through the area Thursday night. The two February tornadoes were the first ones in Wisconsin in recorded history. At a press conference in Evansville, Sheriff Curt Fell said it was "almost a miracle" that only one person was taken to the hospital for injuries. He said the person was in their vehicle at the time and pushed off the road.

EVANSVILLE, Wis. (WKOW) -- Rock County authorities will be giving updates to Evansville residents Friday afternoon and evening after a tornado tore through the area Thursday night. A press conference will be held at 3 p.m. at the Evansville ACE Hardware on 755 Brown School Road. At 5 p.m., there will be a Porter Townhall Meeting at Evansville Fire District on 425 Water Street,The Rock County Sheriff's Office states that there has been a significant number of offers for help and donations.

MADISON (WKOW) -- After historic February tornadoes, state officials are reminding Wisconsinites to not hire predatory storm chaser contractors to do quick repairs. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection recommends property owners be skeptical of door-to-door repair crews who use aggressive, high-pressure sales tactics to get you into a contract. DATCP states no matter the time of year, these transient contractors will try to find people in need.

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison residents have a chance to watch election equipment get tested ahead of the Feb. 20 election. On Saturday, Feb. 10 at 9 a.m., the city will test all tabulators to make sure they're in working order. After each test, the ballot box on the machine will be sealed and marked. On election day, poll workers will verify the serial numbers as they open the polls.
MPD to offer free active shooter response training

MADISON (WKOW) -- It takes three minutes for police to respond to active shooter events, according to the Madison Police Department (MPD). By the time officers arrive, two-thirds of these incidents are over. That's why MPD is hosting a free Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) training in March to help the community be prepared for the event and improve their chances of surviving. Officers will highlight strategies victims use during these events and their outcomes.
Middleton police looking for man who tried to give young girl a ride

MIDDLETON, Wis. (WKOW) -- The Middleton Police Department is looking for a man they say tried to give a 12-year-old girl a ride to school. Capt. Tyler Loether said around 7:50 a.m. Friday, a suspicious man was at a bus stop near Fortune Drive at Shirley Street. Loether said the man, while he was still in his vehicle, asked a 12-year-old girl if she was going to school and offered her a ride. The girl refused and the man drove away.
UW-Madison student accused in sexual assaults convicted of lesser charge

MADISON (WKOW) -- A UW-Madison student charged with sexually assaulting two students on Halloween took a plea Thursday, according to Dane County court records. Robert Joehnk, 22, of Madison pleaded no contest to county disordely conduct, an amended charge. He was originally charged with two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault and disorderly conduct.
