By Zack Meisel / The AthleticFor his first day of work in June 1999, Scott Smith arrived at the makeshift bat factory, a three-level brick corner house in Ottawa, Ontario. Sam Holman handed Smith an order form: six bats, all for José Canseco. Holman handled the first one. Then, it was Smith’s turn. Craftsmanship is not for those with trembling hands. His initial attempt at a handmade bat did not go well, and Holman was irate. “I was thinking my career might last for a half-hour,” Smith said.

Nolan Jones can still visualize the texts and hear the voicemails. He can recall the stranger's voice on the other line who interrupted a conversation with his fiancée on April 1, 2024. Jones ignored the first call. But when the person dialed again, he told Morgan, who was about five months pregnant, he'd call her right back. The Guardians' right fielder can still hear the threats that person and the countless others who called and texted hurled at him that night. I'm going to kill you.

CLEVELAND - April baseball is intended to mislead you. Fortune has a greater influence on a smaller sample. And that's what we have thus far - through about 10 percent of the regular season. A lot can change in a day, a series or a week. Look no further than the Cleveland Guardians, who came into Tuesday's home opener at 3-6 and finished this week at 8-7. To get a better sense of what might be fact and what might be fiction, let's use a blind résumé test and see what we learn.

One morning during spring training in 2013, Octavio Dotel and I sat at a table in the Detroit Tigers' clubhouse in Lakeland, Fla. One by one, he started to rattle off the team names. Mets. Astros. Athletics, Yankees, Royals, Braves. Not even halfway through the list, he paused. White Sox, Pirates. Dodgers, Rockies. Another pause. Blue Jays, Cardinals. Tigers. Dotel beamed as he reached the end, having aced the pop quiz. In 43 seconds, he named all 13 teams he played for - and in the proper order.

And then there's that, which is like the opposite of a walk-off. But a celebration in Cleveland, nonetheless. Go crazy.

There's just nothing in sports like a walk-off walk celebration. Go nuts, Cleveland.
