It began its journey as the weekly Abilene Reporter, under the leadership of Charles Edwin Gilbert, on June 17, 1881, only three months after the city of Abilene was established. This makes it the oldest business still operating in the city. The publication transitioned to a daily format in 1885.

Stick horses are the steed of choice in this contestYoung cowgirls and cowboys squared-off Saturday morning in a contest that tested not only agility, style and athleticism but perhaps most importantly, imagination. The Stick Horse Horse Rodeo at Saturday's Western Heritage Classic was open to children ages 3-9, split into three age divisions. Just like in regular rodeo, these kids competed against the clock in barrel racing and bronc riding, as well as roping.

The Taylor County Expo Center will host a rodeo, trade show, chuckwagon cook-off and other events. The Ranch Horse Association of America holds its World Finals in conjunction with Western Heritage. The ranch rodeo schedule at the Taylor Telecom Arena is also posted online.
