On the morning of April 16, 1947, the deadliest industrial accident in U.S. history occurred in Texas City when a small fire in the holds of the French-registered ship Grandcamp led to a massive explosion that wreaked havoc within a 2,000-mile radius, killing more than 580 people, leveling the seaport and causing more than $100 million in damage. Former Mayor Brandon Capetillo’s family members were living in Texas City at the time, less than a mile from the explosion’s epicenter.
