The federal budget is not only about money, but fundamentally about our country’s morality – our commitment to fairness, equality and unity. Which brings me to, of all things, our nation’s Farm Bill. This sprawling piece of legislation, updated every five years, is intended to combine the interests of farmers with consumers, production with conservation, grassroots cultures with corporate systems, etc. It’s not easy. President Donald Trump is not one to mince words, and that includes voicing his disapproval of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. Although Trump says he won’t fire Powell, he would certainly be justified in doing so — Powell played a key role in making Americans poorer, all while breaking the law. The 2025 legislative session ended with passage of the state's next two-year budget as well as tax relief and other key priorities for Hoosiers. The budget accounts for lowering Indiana's state income tax each of the next two years, which will save taxpayers over $200 million per year. The legislature also advanced major property tax relief and reform legislation this session. Together, these two tax cuts will save Hoosiers $1.3 billion in taxes over the next two years.

Steve Forbes with coauthors Nathan Lewis and Elizabeth Ames addresses the issue of inflation in their recent book “Inflation: What It Is, Why It’s Bad, and How to Fix It” (Encounter books 2022, 134 pages plus notes, $16 hardcover at Amazon). The “Fix,” as one should expect from a hard money proponent like Forbes, is to reinstate a gold standard of sorts which the authors see as a panacea for all our inflationary woes. Perhaps I am being too hard on them.
