The main drag of Jersey City’s northernmost neighborhood recently celebrated the grand opening of a new eatery inspired by the Philippines, as Island Central is open for business. Situated at 329 Central Avenue, the restaurant recently welcomed Mayor Steve Fulop and other dignitaries for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The ownership group behind Island Central includes Sheryll Petilos, who also owns Filipino Grocery at 530 Newark Avenue and Friend’s Corner Tea & Snack Bar in Highland, New York.

The latest high-rise in Jersey City’s rapidly growing Journal Square neighborhood has officially reached its apex, been given an official name, and a timeline as to when construction is slated to wrap up. Panepinto Properties officially announced that its latest development has officially peaked at 577 feet and 54 stories. The project will be called 505 Summit, and it was approved in early 2022 before breaking ground in September 2023.

The ever-changing skyline of Downtown Newark should be getting another pair of glass-heavy towers, as an ambitious project just a few blocks from the Prudential Center has been green-lit. During their May 20 meeting, Newark’s Central Planning Board approved an application for a project known as Mulberry Pointe.

A low-key coastal Mexican restaurant that has garnered a high profile has officially launched its first Garden State location. Mariscos El Submarino is now open in Downtown Jersey City. Situated at 103 Christopher Columbus Drive, Mariscos El Submarino’s Jersey City outpost is their third location. The brand initially launched in 2020 in the Queens neighborhood of Jackson Heights before expanding to Greenpoint in Brooklyn last year.

A Jersey City preservation group has stirred up a frenzy of criticism over the handling of the city’s ongoing restoration of the Loew’s Theater. Chris Perez, executive director of the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy, posted pictures of the historic theater’s iconic marquee being “jaggedly torn down,” arguing that it should have been preserved. “We understand that a replica of the original marquee design will be put in its place,” Perez wrote in a social media post.
