It’s not a stretch to say that the Rafael Devers trade news was shocking when it broke on Sunday night. The Boston Red Sox got a jump start on Major League Baseball’s trade deadline season, dealing their superstar to the San Francisco Giants. Acquiring Devers in the five-player trade solidifies the Giants as contenders in the gauntlet that is the National League West. But where does it leave the always seemingly in-flux Red Sox?

Now that mid-June has rolled around, the battle for the National League East has been everything we could’ve hoped for before the 2025 season started. Only one game New York Mets (45-29) and Philadelphia Phillies (44-30) in the standings and both clubs have been at the top of their games this season. While they may not find themselves atop the division just yet, the Phillies have been shockingly healthy to this point (I am knocking on wood right now).

Entering Wednesday’s action, the Toronto Blue Jays bullpen ranks 11th in baseball in ERA (3.65) and ninth in FIP (3.62). Neither of those numbers are likely to knock anyone’s socks off, but when you take a look at some of the names that have been logging innings this season, what this bullpen has accomplished has become much more impressive. When the Pirates snagged Konnor Griffin 9th overall in the 2024 draft, his upside was far from a question. A six-foot-four, 215-pound 18-year-old who turns in plus run times and was a legitimate prospect on the mound as well is easy to dream on. The concern was around the hit tool. He turned in some mixed results on the summer circuit with a swing that lacked rhythm and fluidity. He often looked rushed in the box, fighting his mechanics, but relying on his athleticism to get by.

“He could be great, if he could only stay healthy.”What current or former MLB player comes to mind when you see that sentence? Current day Mike Trout of the Angels? Remember how great the Indians’ Grady Sizemore was to start his career before injuries derailed everything? How about one of the most famous examples, the Yankees’ Don Mattingly. A potential Hall of Fame career was turned into a “just” a very good one after chronic back problems affected him for years.
