I’ve officially been the editor of Perfumer & Flavorist+ for a little over six months now, and in those six months I have learned so much about this industry. Everyone I have met has been so welcoming and helped me learn all of the little nuances that go into fragrance formulation. I truly don’t think I’ll ever stop being impressed when I learn about a new technology or innovation. Maybe it’s the chemist in me, but there’s something so satisfying about seeing an experiment come to fruition.

When I was a kid, I absolutely HATED the flavor of mint. I didn’t understand why restaurants gave out after-dinner mints or why every single toothpaste had to be mint-flavored. Mint gave me a burning sensation rather than a cooling one, and it was entirely too overwhelming for my young palate. But of course, as I grew up and my tastes changed, I realized the error of my ways. Now I look forward to enjoying a peppermint mocha during the holidays and a scoop of mint chip ice cream in the summer.

It’s fascinating to compare the results to my own values when it comes to both flavor and fragrance products. I want to see how my views stack up with the rest of the world.

They want something they can quickly pull out of the refrigerator and sip on the go. There’s a common joke in my family whenever a gift doesn’t arrive on time or there is an unexpected change in plans. We say, “Due to supply chain constraints, we’re going to dinner on Tuesday instead of Wednesday,” or “Due to supply chain issues, your birthday present will arrive sometime in the next two months.” It’s a catch-all that encompasses every possible situation. The term “supply chain” has become a bit of a monolith in recent years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic.
