    BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA — Cargill Inc., confirmed on June 5 its plan to purchase 100% of the share capital of Australian beef processor Teys Investments Ply Ltd. The Teys Family, who started the business in 1946, decided it was the appropriate time to sell the business to Cargill, a partner shareholder during the last 14 years. The multinational food company will now take full ownership of Teys Australia and Teys USA. The two companies began their joint venture in 2011.

    CORVALLIS, ORE. — Oregon State University (OSU) Extension Service provided a recent update on its progress regarding a three-year, $650,000 grant from the US Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) designed to help add more workers through meat processing training.     MOMENCE, ILL. — Momence Packing, owned by Johnsonville LLC, announced this week the closure of its facility, resulting in the layoff of 274 employees. A WARN Notice from the state of Illinois confirmed that it received notification of the plant closure on June 2. Employees from Momence are expected to receive pay and benefits for 60 days after the closure, according to information from Johnsonville.

    DAKOTA CITY, NEB. — Tyson Fresh Meats will face almost $28,000 in fines from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) after a worker died at its Dakota City, Neb., facility in January. An inspection report from the agency explained that an employee suffered a fatal injury after working on a machine that moved products within the plant.  An electronic sensor for a crane to lower was activated while the person was lying under a machine.

    WASHINGTON — The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert on June 2 regarding a frozen not-ready-to-eat ham croquette product due to misbranding and undeclared allergens. The problem was discovered during routine FSIS in-plant labeling verification activities. The establishment used a different breadcrumb ingredient. The product contains soy and sesame, known allergens, which are not declared on the product label.
