Peak Publishing Ltd. started its journey in November 1995 and serves the region stretching from Saltery Bay to Lund, which also includes Texada Island and Savary Island. The Powell River Peak is a subscription-based newspaper that is published every Wednesday. Subscribers in Powell River receive their copies directly at home through local carriers, and the publication is also available for purchase at select retail stores. Additionally, every household in Powell River gets the Peak Weekender on Fridays. The company employs a team of over 100 carriers, comprising both young individuals and adults.

    City of Powell River Council has approved a development permit for an expansion of the Canadian Coast Guard Powell River search and rescue station by the south harbour. At the June 19 council meeting, director of planning services Jason Gow said the proposed development includes a new workshop building, a disaster response shed and a storage shed. He said before the applicant can apply for a building permit, they must first secure a development permit.

    Youth baseball players had an active weekend, with tournament action and a doubleheader against out-of-town competition. Brenden Frehlich, president of the Powell River Minor Baseball Association, said the under-13 and under-15 rep teams were both busy. U13 Pioneers hosted a tournament at DA Evans Park in Cranberry on Saturday, June 14, and Sunday, June 15. Teams from Nanaimo and Campbell River attended. In addition to the games scheduled, there was a home run derby at 7 pm on June 14.

    City of Powell River’s annual report generated some controversy, as one resident took exception to wording in the city’s vision, mission and values statement in the report. At the July 19 city council meeting, during the public input period, Pat Martin said she had sent numerous emails in the past week identifying a “significant legal error” in the annual report. “I have received a legal opinion from a very distinguished lawyer,” said Martin.

    City of Powell River will have a new chief administrative officer (CAO) beginning July 7. At the June 19 city council meeting, mayor Ron Woznow said on behalf of council, he was happy to announce the appointment of Sundance Topham as the city’s new CAO. “Sundance brings significant experience in local government, having served as CAO in Cumberland and Wells, and most recently as interim CAO for the District of Lantzville,” said Woznow.

    A 37-year-old man convicted of sexually interfering with a girl under age 16 in Powell River returned to court for the second time in less than a year because he breached conditions of his conditional sentence. In June 2024, a BC Supreme Court judge sentenced Kasimir Tyabji-Sandana to two years, less a day, to be served under house arrest, plus three years probation.
