Jury at teen's death inquest retires to consider verdict

The jury at an inquest into the death of a teenager who was in the care of the State when he was murdered over 15 years ago has retired to consider its verdict. Daniel McAnaspie had more than 20 care placements in the 15 months prior to his death as his life became "increasingly chaotic," the inquest in Trim, Co Meath previously heard.
Increase of up to 5% proposed for CIÉ pensioners

An agreement has been reached between the CIÉ Group and the company's Trade Union Group (TUG) in relation to both of CIÉ's pension schemes. Under the proposals, eligible CIÉ pensioners would receive an increase of up to 5%. Promised benefits for all members of CIÉ pension schemes would also be maintained. A consultation process with all stakeholders will take place in the coming weeks, followed by a ballot on the proposal, which will be undertaken by the TUG.
RTB warns of 'concerning trends' of high rents in Galway

The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) has warned of "concerning trends" of rental inflation in Galway that need further investigation. The RTB said that after eight consecutive quarters of high growth in new tenancy rent levels in Galway, it will engage directly with renters, landlords and other rental sector stakeholders in the county this June to investigate the trend further. The board said it will also host a forum to address rental law compliance.
Irish professional services firm Org Group buys Venturi

Cork headquartered Irish multinational professional services company Org Group has acquired technology recruiting business Venturi. Org Group employs over 3,000 people in 10 countries worldwide with subsidiaries including recruitment firm Morgan McKinley and business process managed services company Abtran. Venturi is headquartered in Manchester with offices in New York, the US and Germany.
New estimate shows improvement in competitiveness ranking

New research has shown that Ireland's international competitiveness ranking would improve if Modified Gross National Income (GNI*) is used as an economic indicator instead of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). GNI* is seen as a more accurate measure of the domestic economy as it excludes much of the impact of the multinational sector. The National Competitiveness and Productivity Council (NCPC) has published research re-estimating Ireland's performance in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2024.
Workplaces warned over low readiness for managing AI

Workplaces need to improve their standard of engagement with workers on artificial intelligence (AI), according to CIPD, the professional body for the HR industry. The annual HR Practices in Ireland study from CIPD and the Kemmy Business School at University of Limerick shows that more than half of Irish workplaces have not provided a clear plan on using AI to employees, while two thirds have not provided training on the topic.
Woman given suspended sentence for cruelty to daughters

A 41-year-old woman who stayed with her violent partner even after he grabbed one of her two young daughters by the throat and hit her head on kitchen tiles, has received a two-and-a-half-year suspended sentence. The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Cork Circuit Criminal Court for sentencing today after she pleaded guilty to two counts of cruelty contrary to the Children's Act.
Dingley expected to leave FAI after just one year

CAB puts home of convicted armed robber up for sale

The Criminal Assets Bureau has put the home of a convicted cash-in-transit armed robber up for sale for an asking price of at least €345,000. CAB took possession of the semi-detached double-fronted five-bedroom house in Hazelbury Park in Clonee four months ago. It is to be sold at an online public auction in two weeks starting at the advised minimum value, but is expected to receive a higher price.
Satchwell told gardaí wife's death happened in a flash

Richard Satchwell told gardaí he could not remember the details of how his wife, Tina, died because it all happened in a flash. Mr Satchwell denies the murder of his wife in March 2017. Her body was found six-and-a-half years later buried under the stairs in their home. The jury in the trial of Mr Satchwell watched a video recording of the second interview carried out by gardaí with him, after his wife's remains were found in October 2023.
