The New European

The New European

The New European takes great pride in its journalism, and we hope you feel the same way. Our mission is to provide a strong voice for the pro-EU viewpoint, and to counterbalance the often right-leaning narratives found in much of the UK national press. Currently, we enjoy an average weekly circulation of about 23,000 copies, with approximately 8,000 subscribers. It's remarkable to see how far we’ve come since our launch in the summer of 2016 as a temporary four-week project.

It is a wonder that anyone wants to be chancellor – and have no doubt, hundreds of MPs would chop off several fingers, perhaps even their own, for a chance at the job – because it is surely the worst job in government. Geert Wilders, the 62-year-old, far-right anti-Islam Dutch leader, has pulled his party out of the ruling coalition, saying he now wants to be prime minister himself. But with elections scheduled for the autumn, he could end up frozen out of power.

For a little while, it looked like the US were the exception. Americans voted for a hard- right populist and things went about as well as expected, and so he got voted out again. A term later, however, just about enough people decided that, actually, they just hadn’t had enough yet, and so they brought the charlatan back into power. We, on the old continent and elsewhere, wondered if the electorate or the candidate were to blame.

Here in the maelstrom of Donald Trump’s second term, the state department sets out the US government’s diplomatic position on Substack. That is, at this stage, perhaps the most normal thing that it does. While the delivery mechanism may be unconventional, it is nothing when compared to the content of the message.

The last straw isn’t meant to be the biggest or most important one – that’s the whole point. Still, despite knowing this, I couldn’t help but feel quite gently hysterical as I lost my mind reading about fish. As you may or may not have seen, a Guardian investigation published recently revealed that most British supermarkets sell seabass and seabream, which are linked to “devastating overfishing in Senegal”.
