The City of Toronto on Tuesday afternoon announced it has made the “difficult decision” to euthanize a mated pair of coyotes in Liberty Village and Fort York. According to a release issued by the city, Toronto Animal Services confirmed one coyote in the area was responsible for multiple negative encounters, and his mate was present during several of those altercations.

Rookie Liberal MP Evan Solomon is Canada’s minister of artificial intelligence and digital innovation, a new portfolio that signals a tech focus for Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new government. Solomon, a former CBC and CTV broadcast journalist, was elected to represent the Liberals in Toronto Centre last month. Toronto—Danforth Liberal MP Julie Dabrusin was also named to Carney’s cabinet. Dabrusin, who was elected for a fourth term, will serve as minister of environment and climate change.

When Ontario Housing Minister Rob Flack unveiled his government’s latest bill to tackle the provincial housing crisis on Monday morning, he was joined by Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish and Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow didn’t get the invite — but she did get one longstanding wish granted. The new bill gives mayors more power to adjust development charges, the fees municipalities levy on builders to fund infrastructure such as roads, watermains and community centres.

Ontario hospitals spent more than $9 billion on nurses and other staff from for-profit agencies in a 10-year period, a new study concludes. The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives study, released Monday, examined financial statements for 134 Ontario hospital corporations as well as data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information. It found that from 2013-14 to 2022-23 public hospital spending on staff increased six per cent, but their spending on private agencies increased 98 per cent.

Roars and cheers from a packed crowd at Dominico Field in Christie Pits warmly welcomed the Japanese pitcher onto the field as she officially became the first woman to ever play for a professional men’s baseball team in Canada.

In an unassuming, one room building deep in Tommy Thompson Park, conservation staff and volunteers are hard at work this spring season. On Saturday afternoon, a volunteer returning from a field walk stepped through the door proudly brandishing a small cloth pouch. Inside was a tiny — and likely irritated — migratory bird. In quick order, Shane Abernethy, the “bander-in-charge” of the Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station, identified the creature as a Cape May warbler.

For Carmen Madonia, Hanlan’s Point Beach was the first place where she felt comfortable wearing a bikini. As a trans woman, Madonia said she has been yelled at and harassed at other Toronto beaches for being visibly trans. But Hanlan’s always felt like a safe space. The clothing optional beach on the west shore of the Toronto Islands is recognized as Canada’s oldest surviving queer space and the site of Canada’s first Pride celebration in 1971.

Bike Shares will be ready to ride on the Toronto Islands on Friday May 16, according to the Toronto Parking Authority (TPA), the city agency that operates Bike Share Toronto. Docks for the bikes have already started appearing at various locations on the island. On Friday afternoon, TorontoToday observed two docks on Hanlan’s Island, one near the ferry terminal and another near the entrance to Hanlan’s Point Beach.
