A new Nottingham tower block of up to 18 storeys is tipped for approval after the developer made changes. MRP Nottingham Ltd had been planning to build a 22-storey block at the junction of Queen’s Road and London Road, where a number of commercial units have been demolished. It was to go hand in hand with a 12-storey block, purpose-built for 406 students, before Nottingham councillors deferred the plans at a planning committee meeting in October 2022 due to design concerns.

Cllr Patience Ifediora has been elected as Nottingham’s first-ever female Lord Mayor with an African background. A new Lord Mayor and Sheriff for the city were chosen at a Full Council meeting on Monday (May 12). Cllr Ifediora, who represents the Aspley ward, has been chosen as Lord Mayor, succeeding Cllr Carole McCulloch. Cllr Neghat Khan, leader of the council, said Cllr McCulloch had brought “pride and energy” to the role, before welcoming Cllr Ifediora to the position.

Mansfield District Council has secured £1.58 million through the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The funding, allocated by the East Midlands Counties Combined Authority (EMCCA), will give the council an extra £1.58 million to be distributed to community grants, local events, skills support and business growth initiatives. The grant was discussed at a council meeting for the Portfolio Holder for Corporate and Finance on Friday, 9 May.

Another office block once used by the Government tax service is to be converted for business school uses by the University of Nottingham. From 1994 the Inland Revenue Centre was home to just under 2,000 staff, who at the time worked for Inland Revenue – now HMRC – following its decision to expand outside of London. The offices were put up for sale for £36m after HMRC moved to the new Unity Square block off Sheriff’s Way, close to Nottingham Station, in 2021.

Plans to build a sand and gravel quarry in a Rushcliffe village have received more than 180 objections from residents. Applicant Land Logical Limited submitted a planning application to build a mineral extraction site on land off Green Street, Mill Hill and land at Barton in Fabis off Chestnut Lane in March 2024. Plans would see the extraction of sand and gravel from the land which will then be processed, sold and distributed.
