Ambitious plans to build a new school in Kirklees for pupils with complex autism have taken a major step forward. Currently based at Dog Kennel Bank in Huddersfield, Woodley School and College is relocating to the site of the former Almondbury High School at Fernside Avenue. Once it’s up and running in its new premises, Woodley will be able to accommodate 180 pupils, plus a further 14 at its post-16 provision in Byram Arcade.

A Huddersfield restaurant owner has avoided prison after a series of "serious food hygiene breaches". Ali Shan, 40, from Brighouse, is the owner and director of La Jawab Cafe and Select Grill in Blacker Road, Birkby. In early 2024, Environmental Health Officers visited the premises to conduct food hygiene inspections where they found serious food hygiene breaches, including food left at unsafe temperatures, dirty spice containers, and staff who were lacking essential safety training.

A Cleckheaton community group is confident the local town hall has a viable future after a successful meeting earlier this month. When major financial pressures took hold, Kirklees Council’s Cabinet agreed to mothball the Grade II-Listed town hall in September 2023 as part of a review of its estate. The move left the community outraged, with fears that the council had “neglected” the much-loved venue.
