    As a member of the R&B and funk group Kool & the Gang, Michael Sumler’s music made him famous. But it was his compassion for others that will be his legacy, according to close friend Adrian Meeks. Sumler, known as “Chicago Mike,” was killed late Sunday in a Cobb County crash, according to investigators. He was 71. “Mike was just a great guy. Not just to the music industry, but personally,” Meeks, president of Song Source Music Group, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday.

    Crashes killed 14 people on Georgia roads during the three-day Memorial Day weekend, according to the state Department of Public Safety. That’s up from the same holiday last year, when 11 died in crashes, according to investigators. State troopers cited 413 people for driving under the influence, and the weekend numbers “reflect continued concern on Georgia’s roadways,” the DPS said. No drownings were reported, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said.

    To most people, it’s the unofficial kickoff to summer. But for law enforcement, Memorial Day weekend often marks an uptick in deadly incidents. During last year’s three-day holiday weekend in May, 13 people were killed on Georgia roads and waterways. And that was a decline from previous years. In 2023, crashes across the state killed 16 people over the Memorial Day weekend, and in 2022, the number hit 20, according to investigators.
