On Sept. 26, at the Three Rivers Conference Cross Country Meet at Baker Park Golf Course in Kewanee, Erie-Prophetstown senior Charlie Link made program history, outpacing 93 runners with a time of 16:34.65 to win the boys race. A Plainfield-based nonprofit feeds hundreds of Will County students each weekend through a donation-funded backpack program. The program is called Bags of Hope, and it serves students in Bolingbrook, Joliet, Lockport, Plainfield and Romeoville, said Lana Howe, president and founder of the organization. “We’re not a food pantry. Mary Jo Credi was startled when families of five began asking for help – big families used to be a rarity at the Illinois Valley Food Pantry – but even that did not prepare her for the newest totals. The Illinois Valley Food Pantry in La Salle recently tallied its fiscal year data and recorded 55% more first-time clients than last year. Those are people who’ve never sought food assistance before. New clients are a reliable barometer for tough times and a 55% jump suggests times are hard indeed.

Traveling downtown Streator soon will have more flow. Eleven new traffic light controllers are scheduled to be delivered the week of Oct. 16 and installed, City Engineer Jeremy Palm told the Streator City Council on Tuesday. In May, the City Council appropriated about $90,000 in motor fuel tax funds for the new hardware expected to keep the lights synced for smoother traffic flow.

October is probably my favorite month. It may be the cooler weather, the beautiful colors that fall produces, the chance to pull out forgotten sweaters or the fact the festive holiday season quickly is approaching. YORKVILLE – A second solar farm will be developed in Yorkville after all, now that aldermen have approved a compromise plan reducing the size of the project by nearly a half. The Yorkville City Council was split 5-2 on a series of votes Oct. 10 that will allow Colorado-based Turning Point Energy to construct the solar farm in the Bristol Ridge area. The 5-megawatt facility will occupy a 54-acre site on the east side of Cannonball Trail along the north side of the BNSF Railway.

In McHenry, the city comes by every two weeks from Oct. 2 though Dec. 4, to vacuum away leaves residents raked to the curb. In Woodstock, residents get two chances over four weeks to get their leaves to the curb for collection. Crystal Lake doesn’t use the curbside vacuuming program. There, residents who want the city to dispose of their leaves must put them in paper landscape waste bags, or in garbage bins marked for yard waste only.
