On Sept. 26, at the Three Rivers Conference Cross Country Meet at Baker Park Golf Course in Kewanee, Erie-Prophetstown senior Charlie Link made program history, outpacing 93 runners with a time of 16:34.65 to win the boys race. A Plainfield-based nonprofit feeds hundreds of Will County students each weekend through a donation-funded backpack program. The program is called Bags of Hope, and it serves students in Bolingbrook, Joliet, Lockport, Plainfield and Romeoville, said Lana Howe, president and founder of the organization. “We’re not a food pantry. Mary Jo Credi was startled when families of five began asking for help – big families used to be a rarity at the Illinois Valley Food Pantry – but even that did not prepare her for the newest totals. The Illinois Valley Food Pantry in La Salle recently tallied its fiscal year data and recorded 55% more first-time clients than last year. Those are people who’ve never sought food assistance before. New clients are a reliable barometer for tough times and a 55% jump suggests times are hard indeed.
