Tokio, North Dakota man pleads guilty in 3-year-old's death

TOKIO, N.D. (KVRR) — A Tokio, North Dakota man pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter, two counts of child neglect and assault of a child with a dangerous weapon. Austin Lester, 29, is charged with the neglect and death of a three-year-old child on the Spirit Lake Reservation in August 2022. Lester’s co-defendant Krissy Hinsley was also charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and Child Neglect in Indian country and is scheduled for a change of plea and sentencing hearing in July.
Governor Walz plans visit for Dilworth on Wednesday

DILWORTH, Minn. (KVRR) — Governor Tim Walz is traveling north Wednesday to check out the progress being made at the new Dilworth Fire Station. The project is being funded by the infrastructure bill the governor signed into law in 2023. He’ll be joined by Senator Rob Kupec, Dilworth Mayor Chad Olson and Dilworth Fire Chief Scott Payne. Walz plans to discuss the need to pass a bonding bill this session to support infrastructure projects aimed at creating jobs and improving safety.
The Toasted Frog in downtown Fargo is closing in June

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Another restaurant announcing its closure. The Toasted Frog, located in downtown Fargo, will close for good at the end of June. One of the restaurant’s owners tells us the reason is a lifestyle change and wants more time with family. The restaurant recently won an award for its popular fried cheesy pickles. Fargo’s location opened in December 2014 following the success of its Grand Forks location. That restaurant is set to stay open.
Moorhead swears in Chris Helmick as new police chief

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) — The City of Moorhead swears in its new police chief. Chris Helmick came from across the river where he served the Fargo Police Department since 2001. He reached the title of Captain and also served with the Criminal Investigation Division, Neighborhood Services Division and the Professional Standards Division. Helmick and his family are longtime residents of Moorhead. He replaces Shannon Monroe who stepped down after more than 30 years with the department.

WEST FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — An arrest is made after a Tesla Cybertruck is vandalized outside of Costco in West Fargo. Mitch Benson was shopping at the superstore Saturday afternoon when his Cybertruck was keyed in the parking lot. His vehicle captured video of a man walking up along side the vehicle and quickly scratching the side. Benson put the pictures and video on social media in hopes of someone recognizing the suspect. The post was shared more than 1,300 times on Facebook.
Fatal crash near Northwood, North Dakota

GRAND FORKS COUNTY, N.D. (KVRR) — A man from Hatton, North Dakota is dead after a crash near Northwood. North Dakota Highway Patrol says it happened around 9:30 Wednesday morning at Highway 18 and 4th Avenue Northeast. A truck driven by a 16-year-old boy went through the intersection and hit the car driven by a 66-year-old man. Both vehicles went into the ditch. The teen was taken to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks with non-life-threatening injuries. The victim died at the scene.
