SEATTLE — Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell called for the city to tighten its finances Friday after a grim economic forecast projected a significant revenue gap over the next two years. SEATTLE — Researchers confirmed a new calf was spotted swimming with orcas in the J Pod over the weekend. The Center for Whale Research shared the birth on social media Tuesday, calling it “a sign of hope” for the struggling Southern Resident orcas. Center for Whale Research Field Biologist Mark Malleson was out doing a photo ID survey when he saw the newborn calf swimming alongside J40 as the pod traveled west past Victoria Harbour on Sunday.

LAKE STEVENS, Wash. — All lanes of State Route 9 (SR9) are blocked in Lake Stevens Tuesday after a deadly head-on crash. The two-car crash was reported about 9:30 a.m. on SR 9 at Market Place. Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue said the crash was fatal, although first responders have not said how many people were involved. All lanes are blocked between 20th Street Southeast and Market Place. Drivers are asked to take alternate routes and expect delays in the area.
Seattle, Diaz settle with police captain who claimed retaliation

SEATTLE — A Seattle police captain settled for $950,000 with the city and former police Chief Adrian Diaz after alleging that Diaz retaliated against him for raising concerns about discrimination. Eric Greening sued the city and Diaz in March 2024 after Greening claimed he was demoted from assistant chief to captain after reporting racism in the department. The settlement was signed March 25. The city and Diaz do not admit any liability as part of the settlement.

9 UW students, recent grads have visas revoked, university says

SEATTLE — Nine University of Washington students and recent graduates have had their visas canceled by the U.S. government without prior notice, the university said Monday. In a statement, UW said five current students and four recent graduates participating in post-graduate training were affected. Visas can be canceled for a number of reasons, but college leaders say the government has been quietly terminating students' legal residency status with little notice to students or schools.

SEATTLE — A man accused of setting fire to a Pride flag and stuffing it into a Buddha statue with feces on it outside a Seattle elementary school was charged with a hate crime. The man was charged March 24 with a hate crime and second-degree malicious mischief. His arraignment hearing was set for Monday, but he did not enter a plea because his attorney raised a question of competency, so that will be addressed first.

SEATTLE — The secret’s out. Washington locals know about the wonders of Ruby Beach, and now it’s been highlighted by Lonely Planet as one of the best in the world. The travel guide company released its list of the best 25 beaches in the world at the end of March, and Ruby Beach in Olympic National Park was featured as the best spot for beachcombers. It was the only beach in the United States to make the list. One other West Coast beach was featured, although it was in Canada.
Man pleads guilty in King County crash that killed woman, 3 children

KING COUNTY, Wash. — A man who hit and killed four people and injured two others in a crash in King County in 2024 has pleaded guilty on all felony counts. Chase Jones, 19, pleaded guilty Thursday to four counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault. Jones was previously charged with reckless driving, but that was not part of the plea.

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — A 17-year-old accused of shooting and killing two people at a teen house party over the weekend was charged. The two teens killed were 15 and 19 years old. Prosecutors charged the teen boy Monday with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. The teen appeared in court Monday afternoon and pleaded not guilty to all three counts.
