    SEATTLE — Researchers confirmed a new calf was spotted swimming with orcas in the J Pod over the weekend. The Center for Whale Research shared the birth on social media Tuesday, calling it “a sign of hope” for the struggling Southern Resident orcas. Center for Whale Research Field Biologist Mark Malleson was out doing a photo ID survey when he saw the newborn calf swimming alongside J40 as the pod traveled west past Victoria Harbour on Sunday.

    LAKE STEVENS, Wash. — All lanes of State Route 9 (SR9) are blocked in Lake Stevens Tuesday after a deadly head-on crash. The two-car crash was reported about 9:30 a.m. on SR 9 at Market Place. Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue said the crash was fatal, although first responders have not said how many people were involved. All lanes are blocked between 20th Street Southeast and Market Place. Drivers are asked to take alternate routes and expect delays in the area.

    SEATTLE — A Seattle police captain settled for $950,000 with the city and former police Chief Adrian Diaz after alleging that Diaz retaliated against him for raising concerns about discrimination. Eric Greening sued the city and Diaz in March 2024 after Greening claimed he was demoted from assistant chief to captain after reporting racism in the department. The settlement was signed March 25. The city and Diaz do not admit any liability as part of the settlement.

    SEATTLE — A Seattle City Council committee is expected to consider legislation Tuesday that would tighten regulations on nightclub lounges that are open after 2 a.m. The Public Safety Committee will hear a presentation and possible vote on Council Bill 120956, which is sponsored by committee Chair Robert Kettle. The legislation comes after a series of high-profile shootings outside Seattle lounges.
