US Coast Guard suspends search for captain missing near Westport

WESTPORT, Wash. — The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a 44-year-old captain who went missing when his boat capsized near Westport on Friday. The Coast Guard received a call at about 8:30 a.m. about a fishing vessel that was taking on water and flooding. A boat crew from the Coast Guard’s Grays Harbor station rescued three people from the 68-foot commercial fishing vessel that capsized. However, the captain was not rescued. SEATTLE — The Washington State Supreme Court ruled Thursday to uphold a state law that bans high-capacity magazines. In a 7-2 decision, which reversed a lower court’s ruling, the state Supreme Court sided with the state in a lawsuit filed by Gator’s Custom Guns, a gun shop in Kelso. At issue was a 2022 state law that banned the sale, manufacture and import of ammunition magazines that held more than 10 rounds.

2 Seattle police officers sue department alleging discrimination

SEATTLE — Two more Seattle police officers have sued the department, alleging discrimination. Officers Corey Foy and Michael Griffin filed the lawsuit April 16 in King County Superior Court alleging racism, retaliation and misconduct. Both Foy and Griffin are Black. Griffin, who has been with the department for more than 30 years, and Foy, who has been with the department for years, said they face discrimination on a daily basis, which takes a toll on their mental and physical wellbeing.
Teen sentenced in wrong-way I-5 crash that killed Seattle college student

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — A teen who hit and killed a college student in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 in January has been sentenced. The 17-year-old driver pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and was sentenced April 8 to 15 to 36 weeks in juvenile rehabilitation with the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families. The teen received credit for 74 days served. KING 5 is not naming the teen, because he was not charged as an adult.
State Route 510 closed in Thurston County after culvert failure

LACEY, Wash. — State Route 510 closed Thursday evening in Thurston County after a culvert failed under the roadway. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) closed both directions of the roadway near milepost 6 between Old Pacific Highway Southeast and Rockcress Drive Southeast, which is southeast of Lacey. WSDOT said there were safety concerns with keeping the roadway open before the culvert could be repaired.
