Archbishop Hoban High School's theater director is on administrative leave after being charged with misdemeanor assault of a former female student on a stage at the school in March 2024. Akron Municipal Court records show the director, Chad Kendall, 36, entered a plea of not guilty May 30. A pre-trial is scheduled for June 27.

A 23-year-old man was shot and killed in Akron the night of June 5, the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office said. Authorities, who continue to investigate, have not yet publicly identified the man. The shooting happened around 9 p.m. in the 1100 block of Johnland Avenue, which is off Eastland Avenue in the city's Middlebury neighborhood. When first responders arrived on scene, they found the man sprawled on a driveway.

The Portage County sheriff posted a photo on Facebook this month showing several copies of "The Portager" newspaper ablaze. Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski said he believes a reporter at The Portager twists things to support a "political agenda.""We're just covering the news," The Portager Publisher Ben Wolford said. The Portage County sheriff expressed his disdain for a local media outlet this month by posting a photo on Facebook showing several copies of The Portager newspaper ablaze.
