Cork City and County Councils were owed a combined total of approximately €6.5m for uncollected vacant and derelict site levies at the end of 2023, it has been disclosed in Local Government Audit Reports. The audit report relating to Cork City Council for 2023 revealed that while the authority collected €1.1m of derelict site levies during the year, arrears at year's end had grown to almost €5m (€4.935m).

Policies to reduce the continuously increasing levels of homelessness must be at the heart of the review of the government’s Housing For All strategy, Cork Simon say. The April figures show that 650 people were in emergency accommodation in Cork, the seventh record high in a row. Paul Sheehan, Cork Simon’s head of campaigns and communications told The Echo they were seeing no signs that this trend was going to reverse any time soon.

A centre for assisted human reproduction (AHR), including IVF treatments, is set to commence service provision in Cork later this year, and will be the first centre of its kind in Ireland. A Sinn Féin TD and councillor have said they will work to secure an additional Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) class for a Farranree school, but have questioned why parents and educators “always need to fight” when it comes to special education. Feargal Hurley, principal of Scoil Íosagáin, previously told The Echo that they have had to disappoint parents awaiting a school place for their child after they were not allocated an ASD class they had already made provisions for.

Ukrainians living in Cork are being moved from their accommodation, with a further 800 to move over the coming months. A briefing document circulated to elected representatives on the relocation of beneficiaries of temporary protection explains that the closing of accommodation centres to move people elsewhere “was paused during March to allow for greater planning and notice periods for residents”.
