In a bizarre set of votes Tuesday that came mere hours apart, Nebraska lawmakers moved to provide paid sick leave to more than 25,000 workers — and then changed their minds. Lawmakers have for months been mulling changes to the state's new sick leave law that nearly 75% of Nebraska voters approved last fall, which required employers with fewer than 20 workers to offer at least five days of paid sick leave per year and employers with 20+ workers to offer at least seven paid days of leave annually.

Construction of Nebraska's new prison complex north of Lincoln is already behind schedule and is likely to cost far more than the $350 million lawmakers have set aside for the facility, which figures to be among the most expensive projects in state history. State officials had long maintained that they would build the 1,500-bed prison within the budget lawmakers approved and claimed construction would begin in the fall of 2024.

Ran a 5k in 2020 so I’m sure I can do this 😤😤 https://t.co/e8BbHJKLwU

I went to the polls with Jason Witmer, a 49-year-old Lincoln man who voted for the first time in his life Tuesday after spending years in prison. "It's exciting," he said, "because you know your voice is part of democracy." https://t.co/kDhmLA3D3f

Ahead of the 2026 midterms, some Democratic strategists are “quietly talking about backing independent candidates instead of Democrats … including Nebraska, where the independent Dan Osborn is considering a second Senate run,” the @nytimes reports. https://t.co/uu48Hi29ZN
