+ Ranking baseball's closers for the 2024 season The Pirates have finally elected to take David Bednar out of the closer role, but this may still be a situation to avoid as it appears the team will go with a committee approach the rest of the season. Aroldis Chapman and Dennis Santana figure to be the two main closing options, and to be fair both have pitched exceptionally well since the All-Star break, so I wouldn’t argue against rostering either one.

We lost a few reliever to the IL this week but we also gained two prominent 2024 breakouts in Bryan Hudson, and Reed Garrett who both returned from the IL. Hudson returns to a Brewers bullpen that is just Trevor Megill away from being at full strength, but I’d still expect to see Hudson get plenty of holds chances (Megill as well).

So if I just had waited one more week before moving Bryan Abreu down…To be fair, it had looked like Abreu was turning a corner a few weeks back before looking shaky again, so we may not be out of the woods completely yet. That being said, Abreu has allowed just 3 hits, a walk and a run over 5.1 IP in May while striking out 9, which is pretty much what we’ve come to expect from Abreu in his career.

Ranking baseball's top setup options for the 2024 season. I suppose it is time to move Bryan Abreu off of the top spot in the holds rankings, an unfortunate reality but he just isn’t right at the moment. Abreu’s stuff is still relatively intact and he’s generating swings and misses (16.2% SwStr) but the command has been atrocious. It’s easy to point to the walk rate (14.3%) for his problems but it goes beyond that.

David Roberston has been locked in as the Rangers’ top setup man, with sparkling ratios and a 35.5% CSW and the highest Stuff plus in that Rangers bullpen (120). He’s been throwing his knuckle curve more often this season, dropping his slider usage (which has been knocked around) while also utilizing the changeup more against lefties than in years past.
