It being early in the offseason still and there being only about 12-15 locked-in “closers” at the moment, ranking relievers for SV+HLD’s leagues is a little bit easier than ranking strictly closers.

We have a few lefties charging up the board this week, all names we have seen in the top 50 or so on this list in the past due to their strikeout upside. I talked about Anthony Banda last week when covering the Dodgers bullpen, and how Banda appears to have moved past Alex Vesia in the pecking order. Since the All-Star break Banda holds 28.2% K-BB rate, 22.3% SwStr and 37.2% CSW rates as well as a 2.26 xFIP over 18 innings.

I feel like it’s worth taking a minute to try and breakdown the Dodgers bullpen who just added two reliever from the IL this week and may even get Brusdar Graterol back in a week, which would put them at full strength for the first time. Michael Kopech and Evan Phillips are at the top of the pecking order here and don’t need much selling.

Two names on this list to keep an eye on in Save only leagues are Justin Martinez and Lucas Erceg, as either one (or both) may be on that other list come Tuesday. Martinez now has two saves this past week with Arizona, although I am a bit skeptical to believe he is the guy they want in the role the next two months. Certainly the swing and miss ability and velo scream “potential future closer” but the walk rate just feels like it would be too big of an issue.

+ Top 100 RP rankings for Saves + Holds leagues in 2024. Bryan Abreu, Lucas Erceg, Ben Joyce, Ryan Thompson, and Luke Weaver all had three SV+HLDs this past week. A rare group of non-closers this week, although to be fair, there may be 2-3 guys here who should be closing out games for their respective teams.

The Padres entered last week with a bullpen that certainly needed a boost at the deadline, and not only did they add the best reliever available in Tanner Scott, but they also were able to get Jason Adam, quite possibly the second-best reliever traded in the past week.

+ Ranking baseball's top setup options for the 2024 season. Two high upside holds options returned from the IL this past week after long layoffs, with Julian Merryweather making his first appearance since April and Brock Stewart pitching in his first games since May 1st. Merryweathers velocity still remains down from where it was last year, but I’m hoping that will come over time.

Kevin Ginkel and A.J. Puk have somewhat quietly turned things around over the past couple of months, with each one being in great position to help fantasy managers in the second half. Over their past 21 IP, each has 5 holds, while Ginkel has a strong 26.9% K-BB rate and 2.26 SIERA. Puk has been great himself with a 25.6% K-BB rate, and 2.45 SIERA (plus a 31% CSW and 123 Stuff+). Both have closing experience, and could be called upon to close out games in the coming weeks as well.

A.J. Minter returned to the Braves bullpen this past week and should slot right back into a set-up role along with Joe Jiménez. We talked about Dylan Lee last week and how well he had been pitching over the past two months, but Jimenez has also been great, especially over his past 14 IP (31.5% K and 36.6% CSW rates).

+ Ranking baseball's top setup options for the 2024 season. The Cardinals bullpen got a boost this past week with the return of Giovanny Gallegos, who has been one of the top set up man in baseball in the not too distant past. I’m not too optimistic on Gallegos returning to that form, as his velocity is still down as of his first game back from the IL, but it’s also his first game back so it’s fair to give him some more time to get up to speed.
