Every year, thousands more California residents leave the state than vice versa — and they take their politics with them. In some states, the effect has been the spread of West Coast-liberalism. Instead, it’s mainly because Democratic voters seem to have stayed home. In the 49 California counties where the estimated vote count was nearly complete by Thanksgiving Day — a list that accounted for 97% of the state’s voting-age population — turnout fell by more than 10% compared to the 2020 election.
