The leader of Wisconsin’s 13 public universities said without additional funding in the next state budget, he expects more branch campus closures, decreased affordability for students, layoffs and program cuts. “All of which will hit hardest at our most vulnerable UWs,” Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman said on social media this week. State lawmakers are working this month to set Wisconsin’s next two-year budget.

Most students will soon be required to pay more when applying to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Board of Regents, which oversees UW-Madison and the state’s 12 other public universities, approved a proposal Thursday without discussion to increase UW-Madison’s undergraduate application fee from $70 to $80 starting in August. UW-Madison expects the higher fee would generate over $600,000 each year.

Charles Isbell Jr. will leave the University of Wisconsin-Madison after serving for less than two years as provost. Isbell was named Thursday as the new chancellor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He will start July 16. “As I prepare to depart UW-Madison, I’m especially grateful for the incredible opportunity to work with Chancellor (Jennifer) Mnookin, our leadership team and my many talented colleagues,” Isbell said in a statement.
