Monday, the Sheffield City Council will consider repairs to the west side outdoor warning siren, and will consider on the first reading an ordinance amendment pertaining to fireworks, and to possibly act on the 2nd and 3rd readings as well. This week the Grundy Center City Council passed on the 2nd readings ordinance amendments that would increase the water and sewer rates by 2 percent for each beginning July 1st. The Grundy Center council passed on the 3rd and final reading an ordinance amendment to add no parking along the north side of 235th Street along the Sports Complex. The Grundy Center City Council also approved the fiscal year 2026 city employee wages effective July 1st.
Franklin Supervisors to consider an application from NEW Cooperative

The Franklin County Board of Supervisors Monday at 9:15am will hold a public hearing pertaining to an application from NEW Cooperative, Incorporated to expand the company’s anhydrous ammonia storage and pumping facility at 1389 Wright Avenue east of Rowan. The Franklin supervisors will discuss the public health and home care transition to Franklin General Hospital, and will discuss holiday pay in regard to Labor Day.

The Grundy supervisors will also receive an update from the county attorney regarding changes to the fireworks law effective July 1st. Four arrests made in burglary at a Mason City weaponry business

Friday about 1:25am the Mason City Police Department responded to a burglar alarm at Hart Brothers Weaponry at 613 South Federal Avenue. When officers arrived, they found the front door open. Upon entering, they found a smashed display case that was missing several weapons. Upon further investigation, search warrants were obtained for four Mason City residences and two vehicles.
Federal appeals court rules against county pipeline ordinances in Iowa

A federal appeals court has ruled carbon pipeline restrictions in Shelby and Story Counties are preempted by federal regulations and state law. Shelby and Story County officials adopted ordinances to establish safety standards as well as prohibited zones around places like homes and schools where the pipeline would be barred. The federal appeals court ruled the ordinances would prohibit Summit Carbon Solutions from running its pipeline through areas where it has a state permit to build.

Rockwell man enters guilty plea to a federal drug charge

A 36-year-old Rockwell man was convicted this week of possessing with the intent to distribute methamphetamine in federal court at Sioux City. At his plea hearing, evidence showed that last September 29th, law enforcement conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Dustin Burkhardt. Law enforcement observed an open container in the vehicle and conducted a probable cause search.
Special session held by the Franklin Supervisors

Today the Franklin County Board of Supervisors held a special session and went into a closed session to discuss strategy with legal counsel in matters that are presently in litigation or where litigation is imminent. Those in the closed session were all three county supervisors, the county auditor, the county attorney, and sheriff. The closed session lasted for 90 minutes. No action was taken in open session by the Franklin County Board of Supervisors.
