The new Waterfront Plaza will be named for longtime Mayor Bill Schickel it was announced Thursday at the grand opening and ribbon-cutting of the Riverwalk District and the plaza. "There's no more fitting place than this gathering place for the community, surrounded by art and nature, to honor a great leader for decades. It is my pleasure to announce this plaza shall be named Bill Schickel Plaza," City Administrator Aaron Burnett told the gathered crowd to cheers.

A U.S. Army veteran hoping to move his family to Lake Mills hit a roadblock Monday night -- his dog. Retired Sgt. First Class John Champion has been house hunting in the city, but Lake Mills has an ordinance restricting "dangerous dogs" like his Rottweiler, Heddy, which served with him in the military. Champion pleaded with the City Council to make an exception Monday night, but his request fell on deaf ears.

Mason City celebrated all things kooky and unusual Saturday at the North Iowa Vintage and Oddities Expo in East Park. The all-day event featured food trucks, 50 vendors and live music. The evening was capped off with a performance by Chaotica Fire Arts. The expo opened at noon, and despite the heat and humidity people began arriving in groups and alone. The line of food trucks included Churasan, Husky BBQ, A Shred Above, Janey's Heart Attack Shack, Smokin' Mana's and Woody's Hot Dogs.
