Site - the former Cavalry Barracks (Image: Paul Bagguley) A NEW commemorative display will be unveiled at a historic Colchester site to mark end of the Second World War. A blue plaque will be revealed at the Colchester Cavalry Barracks as part of the VE Day celebrations on May 5 at 11am at a private event. The Victorian barracks were built between 1862 to 1864 and was the first permanent barracks of Colchester Garrison.

A LONGSTANDING festival will return to a Colchester park this summer. The annual Food and Drink Festival will take place in Lower Castle Park on June 28 and June 29 between 11am until 6pm. During the event, there will be many different stalls showcasing some of the best local and international food and drink. Attendees will also be able to enjoy live music and there will be rides for youngsters. Last year's event boasted a record number of 140 stalls.

Area - the site in Flagstaff Road (Image: Google Maps) CONTROVERSIAL plans for 203 homes are set to be decided at a a planning inquiry after an appeal has been launched. Colchester Council refused plans in November last year to build houses on Flagstaff Road which would also include a public open space and parking for cars and bicycles. The area was vacated in 2019 and has been empty ever since, with the land sold by the Ministry of Defence for £8.85 million in 2022.
