Menlo Park's Middle Avenue pilot project is getting a mixed reaction, so commissioners at a Nov. 8 Complete Streets meeting came up with a plan to track its success and conduct outreach. The City Council voted to remove street parking along sections of Middle Avenue in September. The pilot project aimed to increase street safety, particularly for cyclists who could be injured by a car door opening into the bike lane.

After four years of construction, the Menlo Park City Council chose to name the new community center the Belle Haven Community Campus, overriding a vociferous grassroots campaign to name it after late community activist Onetta Harris. The council opted instead to name the campus' recreation center after Harris at a Nov. 14 City Council meeting.

With Menlo Park’s new community campus opening in Belle Haven in mid-2024, the City Council, with an eye on the city's $1 million budget deficit, wants to hold down staffing expenses. The Menlo Park Community Campus (MPCC) is opening at 100 Terminal Ave., replacing the former Onetta Harris Community Center in the Belle Haven neighborhood. Five main services will be offered at the center: an aquatics center, a library, a youth center, a senior center and a recreation center.

Relief was tangible as the Menlo Park Planning Commission on Monday, Nov. 6, concluded its year of zoning conversations, recommending that the City Council raise density in apartment districts to a maximum of 150 units per acre. Zoning changes are required to demonstrate that the city is removing barriers to developing affordable housing by allowing denser housing in more parts of the city. Menlo Park has yet to get its housing element approved.

Walking into Menlo Clock Works, the walls are lined with clocks ranging from tall grandfather clocks with swinging pendulums to neon wall clocks. After 42 years, the Menlo Park clock and watch repair shop is closing down and hosting a retirement sale. When Alex Delly first worked as a clock repairer, he dreamed of running his own shop. Five years later, he opened Clock Works in Menlo Park in 1981. More than four decades later, he and his wife, Sharon, are retiring to focus on new passions.
