A spring/summer outdoor recreation campaign, titled “Breathe in Roscommon” has been launched by Roscommon County Council. This is a novel campaign and one that we should all support. It centres around a celebration of the county’s natural beauty, historic landscapes, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands. While the campaign may be aimed primarily at visitors, it’s time we all took stock of what’s on our own doorstep.

Christina McHughI’m not sure who it was that said “it is better to light a candle than curse the darkness”, but I can tell you I have been cursing the darkness as well as lighting a myriad of candles over the past week, with the only signs of light visible being those coming through the gaping holes where forestry once stood. Where I live, near Castlerea in Co Roscommon, we’re into day eight as I write this without power, and up to a few minutes ago, without water.

A Castlerea native is to be presented with an Order of Australia Medal for his services to Australian Rules Football. John Bligh, whose name was included on the honours list announced on Australia Day, will be presented with his medal at a special ceremony on Wednesday, April 17th. A proud member of North Shore Football Club in Geelong, a port city in Victoria, John emigrated to Australia in 1952 when he was just nine years old.

A man in his 70s has died in a fatal road traffic collision in County Roscommon. Gardaí at Castlerea are appealing for witnesses following the fatal traffic incident today, Saturday, January 27th. Shortly before 2 p.m. Gardaí and emergency services responded to a single vehicle collision on a local road in Frenchpark. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a man in his late 70s, was taken by ambulance to Sligo University Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
