A Girl Scout’s work with a nonprofit connecting English speakers with people in Ukraine allowed her and the people she interacted with a chance to learn about what makes their cultures similar and unique. Waverly resident Sierra Lavelle, a member of Girl Scout Troop 50968 in Clarks Summit, became a mentor for ENGin, a nonprofit organization that connects volunteer English speakers from around the world with people in Ukraine to help them learn English for her Gold Award project.

SCRANTON — In the days following the Oklahoma City bombing, expressions of shock and support for those affected were shared across the country, including in Lackawanna County. The terrorist bombing occurred April 19, 1995, when a truck bomb exploded outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 individuals. It moved people to raise money and donate supplies.

A federal judge ruled a special education teacher in the Scranton School District deliberately assaulted a student and district officials didn’t take steps to prevent it but dismissed other counts against the administrators. U.S. District Judge Karoline Mehalchick agreed in a ruling issued late last month that Erica Stolan engaged in willful misconduct by acting in an abusive manner toward the student, who has multiple disabilities, including autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
