TACOMA, Wash. — One of the area's largest hospital systems is laying off more than 100 people. According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) 116 employees with Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Virtual Health Services will lose their jobs starting in July. In a statement from Chad Melton, the Interim President of the Puget Sound Market of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, he said around 200 employees will be impacted by the changes being made.

TACOMA, Wash. — A new workforce and childcare hub is coming to Tacoma. The Pierce County Central Labor Council, which represents more than 100 labor unions, and its nonprofit arm the Pierce County Labor Community Services Agency, is buying the old Willard Elementary School, most recently Willard Early Learning Center. The council is transforming it to be used for multiple purposes, including a section of the building being turned into a 24-hour affordable childcare center for union employees.

The parents, teachers, and students at the rally wanted the district to reconsider their recent cuts to school staff. They are frustrated and concerned about the decision to cut staff members in schools. The district is facing a $30 million budget shortfall, citing underfunding from the state for years.

SEATTLE — A kayaker is safe and a Washington State Ferries crew is being praised after a mid-route rescue in Puget Sound Sunday. Andrew Palmer was on the Walla Walla ferry serving the Seattle-Bremerton route when he and other passengers spotted someone in distress who was "splashing pretty violently." "You'll have some, you know, whale sightings ... a boat in the way ... but this is the first time that I've ever seen something where the crew actually had to launch a rescue operation," Palmer said.
