This is a famed sandwich sophisticate. It has beauty, charisma, class, sex appeal. OK, forget that last one, but Quo Vadis is a sexy, British bolthole of bliss in Soho and this is their complex, clever star. On the outside, uniform rectangles of fluffy sourdough from Poilâne. Inside, a line of smoky eel chunks standing to attention and an absolute face-slapper serving of mustard and horseradish cream. This is a city of exceptional chops.

London Fields dessert spot Bennys serves its slab of school cake with ice cream or custard. If you make the wrong choice, you can’t sit with us. There’s sprinkle sponge and chocolate on the menu, but the sweet, light, airy cake topped with jam and desiccated coconut is the one that’ll really transport you back to those long foldaway tables. Choose Bird’s-like custard as your topping and they’ll drench the cake in it, just like your favourite dinner lady used to.

Sol’s is a multi-use deli and wine bar that has many counters to lean on and potentially make a new friend. The Bayswater hangout is all about swilling wine and forking crispy patatas bravas while deciding whether you should start serving tinned fish on a doily at home. It’s walk-in-only, so the crowd is pretty fluid and impromptu conversations over what your neighbours are drinking (or snacking on) feel totally natural.

This one goes out to all our Cornish Cruncher fiends, the ones with Stinking Bishop shrines, and fantasies of being tucked up in a dairy duvet made of Gruyère. As we continue to protest society's refusal to normalise eating a block of Comté in your pants, we bring you the next best thing—blessed cheesy bites from London restaurants. No rating: This is a restaurant we want to re-visit before rating, or it’s a coffee shop, bar, or dessert shop. We only rate spots where you can eat a full meal.

Starters, appetisers, tempting little snacks. They can be the best part of a meal. That first chew of a plump oyster, that inhaled slice of buttered focaccia. Nothing beats it. They’re a trailer for the meal ahead and, in fact, at some restaurants a starter is the main event. These seductive appetisers prove that London’s most memorable courses aren’t always the main ones. Although you may need to reorder some of them on the spot. This is a celebration of London’s most exciting first bites.
