Opioid funding used to support law enforcement

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office and the county’s juvenile department will soon be seeing improvements thanks to funding received as part of a nationwide opioid settlement. County Treasurer David Barnes told county commissioners that Curry County has received around $345,000 in opioid settlement payments and expects to receive just over $100,000 more in the next few years. The money is restricted and can only be spent on specific law enforcement activities.
Lakeside election slate filled

While Lakeside will not have a city council meeting for a few more months, the races to fill open seats on the council are well underway. Lakeside City Manager Rick Hohnbaum released a list of candidates who qualified for the ballot last week. In the race for mayor, two candidates will face off in the election. Mark Crouch, who currently serves as the chairman of the city’s Planning Commission, will face off against, Sara Coats. Coats owns and operates Coats Construction and Excavation in Lakeside.
Steele sentenced to six years for manslaughter

A Myrtle Point woman will spend more than four years in prison after being sentenced for the death of a Coquille child she was caring in 2022. Hayley Steele. 28, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter earlier in January and went back before Judge Andrew Combs for sentencing last week. In front of a packed courtroom, Steele was sentenced to 75 months in prison. The sentence was in line with guidelines from Measure 11.
North Bend, Marshfield announce new competition

The Civil War between North Bend High School and Marshfield High School grew a little more intense last week when North Bend Principal Chris Pendleton announced a new contest between the two schools. The long-time rivals will have a new contest to compete for every year after Pendleton and Marshfield Principal Eli Ashton announced that starting in 2024, one school each year will receive a Battle of the Bay trophy.
Herzog, Hollinger file to run for commissioner’s Position 2 seat

A Port of Gold Beach commissioner and member of the Central Curry School Board is planning to take on John Herzog in the race for Position 2 county commissioner in Curry County. Patrick Hollinger of Gold Beach filed for the Position 2 seat on September 15, the same day Herzog filed for re-election. Hollinger, who is self-employed in lodge and guide service, has a bachelor’s degree from Humboldt State University.
Fields taking shape for county elections

Two popular elected officials and one newcomer are headed toward a battle in the upcoming race for Coos County commissioner in the May primary election. Incumbent Position 1 Commissioner Bob Main filed for re-election last week, setting up at least a three-person race for the one commissioner’s seat that is up for grabs in 2024. Main, who lives in Coquille, will be seeking another term in office after previously serving as county assessor.
One injured in Coos Bay apartment fire

One man was taken to the hospital in an ambulance after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Coos Bay on Friday afternoon. The blaze erupted at a home that had been turned into an apartment complex at the intersection of 4th Street and Hall Street shortly after 2 p.m. Friday. Kevin Dubisar happened to be driving by as the flames erupted, saying he wasn’t sure what he was seeing when he drove up. “I just came down the road and it looked like a bonfire,” Dubisar said.
Council takes step to rein in Noordhoff

The North Bend City Council voted 6-1 last week to temporarily suspend council rules and ban Councilor Susannah Noordhoff from directly contacting city staff after repeated allegations of outbursts against staff and at public meetings. The vote came one day after Mayor Jessica Engelke refused to allow Noordhoff to discuss an agenda item related to an ongoing dispute between Noordhoff and City Administrator David Milliron.

Coos Bay to ban leaves in city streets

After an in-depth discussion, the Coos Bay City Council voted unanimously to approve an ordinance that will make it illegal to rake, push or blow leaves into city streets. The current code says property owners or tenants can clean their gutters, yards of sidewalks by sweeping leaves into the street. Deputy Public Works Director Jennifer Wirsing said the change would help the city street sweeper while also protecting the sewer system.
