The Curry County Sheriff’s Office and the county’s juvenile department will soon be seeing improvements thanks to funding received as part of a nationwide opioid settlement. County Treasurer David Barnes told county commissioners that Curry County has received around $345,000 in opioid settlement payments and expects to receive just over $100,000 more in the next few years. The money is restricted and can only be spent on specific law enforcement activities.

While Lakeside will not have a city council meeting for a few more months, the races to fill open seats on the council are well underway. Lakeside City Manager Rick Hohnbaum released a list of candidates who qualified for the ballot last week. In the race for mayor, two candidates will face off in the election. Mark Crouch, who currently serves as the chairman of the city’s Planning Commission, will face off against, Sara Coats. Coats owns and operates Coats Construction and Excavation in Lakeside.

A Myrtle Point woman will spend more than four years in prison after being sentenced for the death of a Coquille child she was caring in 2022. Hayley Steele. 28, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter earlier in January and went back before Judge Andrew Combs for sentencing last week. In front of a packed courtroom, Steele was sentenced to 75 months in prison. The sentence was in line with guidelines from Measure 11.

The Civil War between North Bend High School and Marshfield High School grew a little more intense last week when North Bend Principal Chris Pendleton announced a new contest between the two schools. The long-time rivals will have a new contest to compete for every year after Pendleton and Marshfield Principal Eli Ashton announced that starting in 2024, one school each year will receive a Battle of the Bay trophy.

A Port of Gold Beach commissioner and member of the Central Curry School Board is planning to take on John Herzog in the race for Position 2 county commissioner in Curry County. Patrick Hollinger of Gold Beach filed for the Position 2 seat on September 15, the same day Herzog filed for re-election. Hollinger, who is self-employed in lodge and guide service, has a bachelor’s degree from Humboldt State University.
