Students and instructors alike at North Island College in Campbell River are pretty excited these days about seaweed. “So it’s great for doing a bit of exfoliating. It looks like it’s quite bumpy but it’s actually quite soft,” student Cristi May Sacht told those who crowded around her during an open house Wednesday. May Sacht is part of the Seaweed Innovation Hub that’s taking a leading role in seaweed science on the B.C. coast.

Students in a Social Justice class at Alberni District Secondary School in Port Alberni have come up with three recommendations they say would make Cathedral Grove safer for pedestrians. This includes an overhead walkway, an underground pedestrian tunnel and sidewalks along Highway 4. “Why wait until someone is hurt or killed before we actually do something about it?” said Hannah Banford, one of the five students involved in the project.

Mounties in Courtenay say a 60-year-old Comox Valley man was arrested and could face charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, mischief and failure to remain at the scene of a crash, after an incident in Cumberland Sunday afternoon. Part of a dispute between a man on an ATV and a group of young teens was recorded on cell phone video, showing the all-terrain vehicle leaving the scene of the incident.

A study by student researchers at Vancouver Island University (VIU) in Nanaimo has found that 35 per cent of students surveyed don’t have enough food, and that 39 per cent are forced to skip meals on a weekly basis. According to the survey, students who identify as food insecure skip 4.5 meals per week on average, with some missing as many as 20.

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds Demonstration Team is down to its last few days of practice in Comox before starting the 2025 airshow season. The team trains in Comox every spring and has been here since May 3 and will leave this Saturday. They have been performing twice daily as the team hones its acrobatic aerial formations. “Yeah, for me this is something I’ve wanted to do since I was probably eight years old,” said pilot Scott Boyd.
