An RCMP helicopter and Police Dog Services team were called in to help capture a suspect who fled a rollover crash in Courtenay Thursday afternoon. It was the second rollover crash in a matter of 20 minutes, a short distance from each other in North Courtenay. The bizarre series of events began just after 5 p.m. when an SUV travelling southbound on Island Highway North went into the ditch and flipped on to its roof at Cotton Road.

Tom Grimmer built his first passive house in Comox about seven years ago. It was among a small handful of passive homes on the Island at the time. Now, he’s building another one in Courtenay. This time, it’s a mass timber passive house, possibly the first on the Island. “This is the first mass timber, that I’m aware of, the first mass timber build on Vancouver Island and there’s very few in Canada for that matter,” he told CHEK News Wednesday.

The quiet placing of a plaque on a totem pole in Victoria’s Beacon Hill Park in 1958 is being remembered in a new film exploring the history of the world’s tallest totem. At the time, the plaque nearly went unnoticed. “Victoria council decided they were going to make it a memorial pole and like I said, nobody knew about it,” said Clarence ‘Butch’ Dick, a master carver with the Songhees Nation.

The Conservative Party of Canada had eyes on four or five Vancouver Island ridings with hopes of painting it blue outside of Greater Victoria, but walked away with three in Monday’s federal election as the party regains a foothold on the Island. After weeks of being projected to win, it isn’t a huge surprise in the end that newcomer Aaron Gunn took the northernmost riding of North Island-Powell River. He spent the day Monday trying to block out the nerves.
