SPANISH FORK — School staff members usually prepare for the school year during the summer, but they don’t usually do it at a SWAT training center gun range. On a Saturday morning last fall, kindergarten teacher Micki Hooley strapped on a bullet proof vest and shot at a target designed to resemble a school intruder. “Now I want you to place one right between his eyes,” said her instructor, Utah County Under Sheriff Shaun Bufton. Her bullets hit the mark.

SALT LAKE CITY — The pack of athletes at the starting line looks as big as a football team, but this meeting, in front of a few thousand fans, is a high school mountain bike race. "We are the largest youth cycling organization in the nation," said Dallen Atack, board president of the Utah High School Cycling League. Just 10 years ago, there were 320 riders. Now more than 7,500 students compete in Utah. "I love being out there all the time," said Morgan High School rider Blair Erickson.

Just ten years ago, there were 320 riders. Now more than 7,500 students compete.

CEDAR CITY — The chill music and warm night make it easy to think that all is well in this Cedar City neighborhood. But many of the students attending Southern Utah University have serious concerns about finding and paying for housing. "We're building more houses now, but there was a moment there, where you weren't sure you would have a place to live," one college student told KSL-TV. Utahns all over the state share the same anxiety.
