With just days left to vote in the April 1 city election, the four candidates in the race for two Anchorage School Board seats are pushing to get their messages out to voters. Challenging incumbent Margo Bellamy for Seat A is first-time school board candidate Alexander Rosales. Candidate Mark Anthony Cox is challengingincumbent Kelly Lessens for Seat Bin his fourth bid for a school board seat, after three unsuccessful runs for school board in recent years.

Mar. 19—The Anchorage Assembly on Tuesday rejected a proposal to add a 3% sales tax in the municipality. Members voted 8-4 to postpone the legislation indefinitely, essentially killing it. The measure would have sent to voters during a September special election the question of whether to institute the tax. The vote puts a cap on more than six months of debate among residents and city leaders, though several Assembly members on Tuesday said the sales tax conversation is far from over.

This April, Anchorage voters will decide on eight bonds totaling up to $124 million and two new municipal tax levy proposals, in addition to electing six Assembly members and two school board members. The city proposes bonds each year in order to pay for projects and improvements beyond what it can include in its annual budget.

A new city law went into effect this month: Anchorage bars, restaurants and breweries are now required to check the identification of anyone purchasing alcohol, no matter a patron’s age or how gray-haired they may be. The Anchorage Assembly passed an ordinance in December that expanded the city’s mandatory ID check law to all establishments selling or serving alcohol starting March 1. Previously, municipal law required only liquor stores to check IDs for every sale.
