ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Across the state, Alaska is continuing to see a dwindling childcare sector. According to Thread, a non-profit focusing on improving access to affordable and high-quality childcare, the state has lost 25% of its childcare providers since the pandemic, and said new ones aren’t opening fast enough. “We’re really concerned,” Stephanie Berglund, the CEO of Thread, said.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Anchorage welcomed in its first cruise ship of the season. The Nieuw Amsterdam with Holland America Line arrived in port Thursday morning, carrying around 2,100 passengers. This ship is one of four Holland America Line cruise ships that will dock in Anchorage this season. “We are celebrating our 30th anniversary. This is our very first cruise we’ve ever taken,” Kellie Berger, an Oregon tourist on the ship, said.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Villages close to Mount Spurr could be at risk of experiencing more ashfall than the Anchorage areaif the volcano were to erupt. According to the US Geological Survey Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), villages like Tyonek — which is located about 40 miles southeast of the volcano — could see around an inch fall of ashfall. According to the AVO, Anchorage and the Mat-Su could see up to ¼ inch of ashfall, depending on the wind direction following an eruption.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - An Anchorage non-profit that has spent the last two decades helping grow small businesses is losing its funding,according to a letter from the Cook Inlet Tribal Council to the Anchorage Community Land Trust (ACLT). On April 18th, ACLT received the letter stating that the Cook Inlet Tribal Council’s grants from the U.S. Department of Commerce were effectively terminated on April 17th.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - As Alaska transitions into wildfire season, more firefighters are entering the season with a larger understanding of how to fight wildland fires. On Tuesday, 21 firefighters graduated from the Alaska Basic Wildland Firefighter Academy. The academy, sponsored by the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection, is one of four targeted training academies the division has this spring.
