ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - On Friday morning, city crews spread out around the homeless camp at Davis Park and the snow dump across the street, posting notices that the camp would be abated on June 17. Mountain View Community Council President Phil Cannon watched as they hammered the notices into nearby trees. Cannon said the LaFrance administration attended a community council meeting earlier in the week to announce their plans.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - It was expected to be a major headache for commuters from the Mat-Su, but so far, a major bridge reconstruction project on the Glenn Highway has gone more smoothly than anticipated. “With the amount of traffic on these bridges, we really tried to prepare for a worst-case scenario but thankfully that has not happened,” said Justin Shelby, an administrative operations manager with the Alaska Department of Transportation.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Wednesday was the last day of school for thousands of students in the Anchorage School District, but at Lake Hood Elementary, the celebration is bittersweet. Students and staff are getting out for summer vacation, but they won’t be returning to the building in the fall. Lake Hood is one of two elementary schools — the other being Nunaka Valley — that is closing at the end of the school year.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - It’s a plant sale some people wait for all year, and apparently don’t mind getting up early to be the first in line. That’s what happened Tuesday morning, the first day of the Hiland Mountain Correctional Center Plant Sale in Eagle River. “Our community members actually started showing up at 7 a.m.,” said DOC Staff Sgt. Leighann Pass, who oversees the sale.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - We’ve all heard that buckling our seat belts saves lives; the same thing goes for car seats, according to Anchorage Firefighter Ryan Sharr. “The amount of injuries that come from an improperly — or no installation of a car seat — is staggering,” Sharr said. Sharr is a car seat technician instructor at the Anchorage Fire Department.
