ROCHESTER, Minn.- Dr. Kent Pekel, superintendent at Rochester Public Schools, announced the district's intention to ask the Department of Education to reconsider the cancellation of a $1.9 million dollars in grant funding at a school board meeting on Tuesday, May 6. The district has 30 days to file for reconsideration and Dr. Pekel says without that funding the program it supports, School-Based Mental Health Scholars, would have to be canceled with it.

ROCHESTER, Minn.-Sargent's on Second is one of over two dozen retailers in Minnesota and Iowa that will be selling a new type of plant this May, the Firefly Petunia. According to Sargent's the plant is a genetically engineered flower created by Light Bio using genes from bioluminescent mushrooms, that is having its first commercial rollout across the country for the 2025 planting season.

ROCHESTER, Minn.- Over 30 employees took part in a practice picket at a Kemps warehouse, on Monday, May 5, taking advantage of their off hours to show what could happen if their current contract demands aren't met. Their union, Teamsters Local 120, says members are currently asking for better wages, a new pension plan and better health insurance coverage to keep up with inflation. Members say on average workers at the warehouse make between $20 to $29 per hour.

ROCHESTER, Minn.- Dozens of parents, civil rights activists and community members held a protest at City Hall on Monday, May 5, in response to a racially charged incident that happened at Soldiers Field Memorial Park. A woman, identified on her GiveSendGo campaign as Shiloh Hendrix, was captured on video via TikTok calling an autistic black child the N-word. Hendrix has since started an online fundraising campaign, saying the incident has led to her family being harassed, raising $678,000.

ROCHESTER, Minn.- An unfinished dispatch room may see new life at Rochester's Fire Station 2 after sitting unused for a decade. The city of Rochester plans to open bidding to remake the 1,700 square foot space into a new facility to house meetings and training for emergency personnel from the city fire department, police department and county staff. The project is expected to cost around $293,000 using funding from a 2023 Public Safety Act investment the city received from the state of Minnesota.

ROCHESTER, Minn.- Tap House's annual Beer Street Social wrapped up began closing up an hour early due to light rain on Friday, May 2. According to Christine Stahl, the owner of Tap House, turnout was much lower than last year due to the weather. Vendors like Chris Mordick with Toppling Goliath say despite the turnout the event was still fun to attend. "A little bit of a commute for me, but I love coming down, it's an event I don't miss every year," Mordick siad.
