DOWNTOWN — Latino pride was in full display as thousands flocked to Grant Park over Memorial Day weekend for Sueños Music Festival, Chicago’s largest Latin music fest. The festival, now in its fourth year, drew thousands to watch some of the most influential Latin music artists, including Colombian Grammy-winning superstar Shakira, Peso Pluma, Don Omar and Grupo Frontera.

GAGE PARK — Isela Sarmiento first came to Centro Sanar’s mental health clinic four years ago while looking for treatment for her anxiety, panic attacks and depression. At the Southwest Side clinic, Sarmiento found the specialized mental health services she needed to treat complex trauma, she said. Diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, Sarmiento, 40, said meeting people or interacting with strangers in public spaces made her feel deeply anxious, disrupting her life.

PILSEN — The family of a 38-year-old woman fatally shot in Pilsen has launched a fundraiser to help pay for her burial and memorial. Maria Izquierdo was killed May 4 in a shooting that remains under investigation. She is survived by three children, who are under the care of her sister-in-law, Billi Andino, according to a GoFundMe set up to support the family.

CHICAGO – Immigrant advocates and medical experts are calling on local officials to preserve a state program slated to end this summer that provides health care to more than 33,000 immigrants. “I’m really concerned about not having health insurance. Without it, I’m going to stop getting [many] treatments,” said Gabriela Piceno, a Southwest Side neighbor and recipient of the Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults program.
