The MDR Cheesecake Factory earns the top spot for the same reason many people love SoCal in the first place: incredible beach access. The second-oldest Cheesecake Factory ever was obviously built to take advantage of its primo waterfront views, with a sprawling three-level patio taking up most of the restaurant. The backdrop is fit for a Visit California ad: you’ll see yachts anchored in the harbor, people playing sunset volleyball, and on a clear day, mountaintops on the horizon.

The Cheesecake Factory in Cerritos is arguably the best of LA's outer-suburb TCFs, assuming you don’t mind the covered patio with a view of the 605 in the distance. We like that this roomy location sits in a fairly quiet part of Los Cerritos Center, which means an asphalt ocean of open parking spots, and that it’s attached to a nice movie theatre (the highly underrated Harkins, with its comfy reclinable seats), making it ideal for a little lunch-matinee combo.

The Redondo Beach Cheesecake Factory is a true wild card. It does have a harbor view, but it’s more close-ups of barnacled sailboat hulls than postcard panorama. There’s a second floor, but it’s reserved for private events, and the patio is currently under construction (the corrosive sea air has taken its toll on the exterior over the years). And aside from some spectacular murals—including one that reads “In Cheesecake We Trust” in Latin—the decor is surprisingly muted.

We’re convinced this shrimp taco is the best way to spend $3 in this city, especially when $3 doesn’t get you much at all. Mariscos Jalisco assembles hundreds of these miniature symphonies per day: a crisp golden-brown shell plumped with shrimp, doused in a refreshing tomato-cabbage salsa, and topped with a little avocado hat. It’s the perfect balance of hot and cold, fried and fresh, and humble and decadent, all for the price of a kiwi at Erewhon.

As the name suggests, a meal at 101 Noodle Express isn’t a long affair. Despite being full service, you can easily get in and out of this Alhambra strip mall spot in under a half hour. The essential order here is the beef roll, which 101 Noodle Express first popularized many years ago (possibly even invented?), and still makes as well as anyone in town. It's essentially a fried scallion pancake wrapped around slices of braised beef, cilantro, and a sweet, hoisin-like bean sauce.

Is Al & Bea’s bean and cheese the best burrito in town? We’re going to say yes. The 50-year-old Boyle Heights order-at-the-window spot is a classic. Head there on a Saturday afternoon and you’ll find the whole neighborhood hanging out - families, high school dates, local firemen, and everyone in between. You could certainly get a fried taco or a tostada and walk away thrilled, but there isn’t anything that should deter you from that simple but glorious burrito.

Of all the big Korean chicken franchises—Kyochon, Bb.q Chicken, Pelicana, etc.—CM Chicken, short for Choong Man Chicken, flies most under the radar. Despite having 50+ locations across the country, the only local branch of this causal pub is in Gardena, but even if you're not in the South Bay, their unique Snow Onion Chicken is worth a trip. Hulking pieces of bone-in chicken are topped with a huge mound of shaved raw onion, and then smothered in a sweet coleslaw-esque sauce.
