The trucking company at the centre of the latest overpass strike in the Lower Mainland is the same one involved in a crash into a Kelowna home in early 2023.
A truck belonging to Chohan Freight Forwarders Ltd. hit an overpass on Highway 99 in Delta on Dec. 28 causing significant damage.

Following the success of last year’s Making Waves Mural Festival, Peachland council has approved a new piece of art for a district-owned building. Working with artists, the Peachland Community Connects Society (PCSS) put up three murals on privately owned businesses during the September long weekend in 2022 as part of the inaugural festival. West Kelowna Fire Rescue (WKFR) is recruiting paid on-call firefighters. Online applications are being accepted until Oct. 15 and training for successful candidates will begin in January 2024. Previous firefighting experience is not required as successful applicants will undergo a nine-month training program, along with on the job experience. An in-person Information session is scheduled for Wednesday, Sep. 27, starting at 6 p.m. at Glenrosa Firehall Station #34 (3399 Gates Road).

An out-of-control wildfire is burning about 15 kilometres west of Peachland. The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says the human-caused blaze was discovered around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept 16. It is currently 10 hectares in size. There are no evacuation orders or alerts associated with the fire, according to the BCWS.

RCMP is looking for the owner of a wallet containing a substantial amount of cash that was turned in at Kelowna International Airport (YLW). On Aug. 15, police received a report from airport staff about a black Anne Klein wallet containing Canadian currency. The exact location where the wallet was found remains unclear, according to RCMP. Despite exhaustive efforts by police officers and airport staff, identifying the owner of the wallet has proven unsuccessful to date.

West Kelowna council has ‘reluctantly’ approved a contract to build a second emergency exit for the Casa Loma neighbourhood. The reluctance stemmed from the project being over budget and what several councillors said were ‘confusing’ budget documents. The original estimate was $995,000, however, the city received only one bid for the project at $1.186 million.

A community garden and dog park in West Kelowna is being moved just a tennis ball throw away from its original location. The land the facilities are located on at Westbank Town Centre Park was leased from Central Okanagan Public Schools (COPS). With the reconstruction of George Pringle Secondary, COPS needed the land back. There will now be a public record when individuals or groups seek to influence a decision of Kelowna council. However, councillors had several questions and concerns before unanimously approving a lobbyist registry at its regular meeting on Sep. 11. Coun. Rick Webber felt the wording of the policy, which reads in part “applies to individuals or groups, whether paid or unpaid, who communicate with a member of council in an attempt to influence a decision of council,” was too broad.
