ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - “Sivulliq Ancestor” is an Inupiaq story that is told from 1890′s Arctic Alaska after smallpox devastated Indigenous communities. “But at the core of the story is courage and sacrifice, traditional knowledge of the land — ancient knowledge — and essentially a mother’s love for her children,” says author Lily Tuzroyluke. It is a love she can relate to. As a mom herself, Tuzroyluke’s son Luke was diagnosed with autism when he was five years old.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Ever since Anchorage chef Kellie Puff was a little girl, baking was in her blood. “I always wanted an easy-bake oven, it was the thing back in the day,” she said. It wasn’t until her late 20s that she really started to develop a passion for it. Then, one summer, Puff said she made some desserts for a high school reunion that everyone gushed over and asked where she bought them from. “I was like, ‘Oh, I made them.’ I was so excited,” she said.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - They are the original inhabitants of Alaska’s Southcentral region, but not always have the Dena’ina people been seen. Thanks to a new project, people will now have a better understanding of the impact they made. A small crowd gathered at Point Woronzof last month where the fourth Indigenous place name marker was installed. It was one of 32 locations around Anchorage and the Native Village of Eklutna where place markers have been and will be erected.

It’s easy to feel a bit overwhelmed, but Mariah Alexander, a lifestyle content creator and mom of three kids ages 9, 4, and 14 months old, said keeping it simple and planning ahead of time helps make the transition smoother. For her, back-to-school shopping starts in July. “I start with just getting clothes here and there,” she said.
