SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A local chocolate shop in Deadwood is feeling the effects of the rising cost of chocolate, but is determined to make it through the difficult time for its chocolate-loving customers. Global shortages in key cocoa-growing regions and general inflation have caused chocolate prices to increase since early 2024. “Our cost for the chocolate has more than doubled over the last year,” said Carolie Tautkus, co-owner of Chubby Chipmunk’s in Deadwood.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The Trump Administration recently proposed eliminating funding for Head Start programs across the country. The South Dakota organization says the cut would be detrimental to the state. National media outlets report Trump’s latest budget proposal doesn’t include funding for Head Start, which provides childcare, education and other services for low income families. In 2024, South Dakota received over $31 million in federal funding for the program.

Food forests are small gardens with diverse edible vegetation that mimic the natural forest ecosystem. The Brookings food forest is set to go next to the CDouglas Chittick Community Gardens.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Demolition of the McKennan Park pool will start this week. The 50-year-old pool and bathhouse are coming down to make room for the new wading pool and warming house. Parks Planning and Project Manager Mike Patten said the demolition should take about two weeks. Construction on the new facilities is expected to start between mid-May and early June.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – As hundreds search for Rosebud woman Savannah Standing Bear, who went missing three weeks ago, her family hopes she returns home safe. Standing Bear, 22, went missing on March 25 in Parmelee, South Dakota. Her mother, Gayla Smith, told KELOLAND News the last interaction she had with Standing Bear was the night of March 24, before Savannah said she was “going out.” She has not been in contact with her family or law enforcement since.
